Vt. State Police - 4:25 pm Tue Dec 4th, 2012
For the past few months' law enforcement officers from Orange County Vermont and New Hampshire have been searching for a fugitive from justice named Michael J. Hoehl, age 28 of Corinth.
Hoehl was wanted by Probation and Parole in both Vermont and New Hampshire for parole violations. It was believed that Hoehl was in the Orange County area, operating a Mazda Prot?; in which Hoehl was known to re-paint to change the color and disguise from law enforcement.
December 4, during a proactive patrol Trooper Joshua Lewis, found the Prot? parked in a driveway along the Leighton Hill Road in Newbury. Troopers began a surveillance of the residence beginning at approximately 1AM this morning, waiting for Hoehl to come out. At approximately 7:45AM Heohl left the residence in the Prot?; attempting to elude troopers.
The vehicle's tires were spiked, flattening three tires; however Hoehl continued to run from police. After driving approximately 2.5 miles, Hoehl eventually pulled into a field off of Peach Brook Road, where he ran into the woods. Troopers, including a K-9 unit, pursued Hoehl into the woods. A short distance into the woods Hoehl stopped and turned towards troopers and displayed a handgun.
Heohl, who is a convicted felon in Vermont and New Hampshire, waved the gun around, indicated the gun was loaded and the safety was off; then dared troopers to shoot him. Troopers negotiated with Hoehl for approximately one hour until he peacefully surrendered. Hoehl was taken into custody at approximately 10AM without further incident and no one was injured as a result of this case.
Hoehl was transported to the Bradford Barracks where he was arrested and processed for Grand Larceny, Possession of Stolen Property, Burglary, Possession of Marijuana, Gross Negligent Operation, Attempting to Elude, Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Operating Vehicle without Owner's Consent, and Resisting Arrest. Hoehl was subsequently taken into custody by Probation and Parole, then transported and lodged at the Northeast Correctional Complex in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.
Members of the Orange County Sherriff's Department and the Vermont Department of Liquor Control assisted with the incident.
