This vigorous "asana" class is inspired by Beryl Bender Birch's compassionate take on Ashtanga Yoga. Some Yoga experience is recommended but not required. Be prepared to sweat, come well hydrated, with an empty belly. The room will be warm. The class will include "sun salutations", standing and seated postures and back bending (with compassion) from the first and second series of Ashtanga. The goal of the teaching will be to give individual attention and hands on adjustments. Each modification, with practice and patience, will eventually lead to a deeper expression of the posture for each practioner.

This class will help beginners by going thru the Power Yoga sequence in four segments.  Learn the Sun Salute Warm-ups, Standing postures, Seated Postures and Closing postures.  Thru demonstration, participation, and question and answer sessions students will learn how to navigate this physically and mentally challenging practice.  Mike’s personal experience and training of navigating the practice through back, knee and many other injuries earned skiing, mountain biking and living life has helped him gain a greater understanding of how to practice by modifying postures to build strength while injured.  All students have some history of injury, the question and answer session will help everyone understand how backing off at the right time in the right way can increase the benefit of yoga.  Everyone can do this practice!

Each class will start with stretching techniques to warm up and work on strengthening and flexibility. Depending on the dance background of the class, we will work on different combinations as we learn to listen to the beats of popular music. Kids love to listen to and learn the different types of instruments that are used in hip-hop music. Each class we will work on a choreographed dance that will help students with the memorization of steps. Along with choreography, we will work on group formations, stage performance and of course, hip-hop freestyle.  Rick’s fun and energetic style of hip-hop dance makes his class a great start for those interested in dance but also for those who have a couple years under their feet. Wear comfortable clothing, street shoes and come prepared to move!
