Kids eat free in summer breakfast, lunch program

Waterbury Record - 12:53 pm Thu Jul 3rd, 2014

From muffins and fresh fruit to chicken tenders and cheeseburgers, kids in Waterbury can now chow down on a healthy breakfast and lunch five days a week - for free.

Beginning this week, anyone under age 18 can stop at the new picnic pavilion at Anderson Fields, near the town swimming pool, Monday through Friday, and enjoy a healthy breakfast and lunch under a revamped summer food program provided in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The Waterbury Parks and Recreation Department serves the meals to anyone under age 18, said department director Chad Ummel, and require no registration, paperwork or verification of residency.

"Children simply come to the picnic pavilion to eat, no questions asked," he said.
