Student boats remain afloat (mostly)

Seventh and eighth grade students at Bishop Marshall School in Morrisville met the challenge of applying their understanding of buoyancy, density and pressure to the first BJAMS Cardboard Boat Rally.

Each student, using only cardboard and duct tape, had to design a simple boat capable of carrying the designer while remaining buoyant for a minimum of one minute. Students calculated volume and weight of their boat, added their body weight and compared that buoyancy force to the volume of fresh water their boat would displace.
