going maintenance to the mountain and the facilities. Much of this work is unheralded and often times unseen but it is all part of a concerted plan to keep our little slice of heaven looking and working well. Thanks to Pete, Stevie, Nate and Chuck for all the hard work they do year-round for Mad River Glen - YOU GUYS ROCK!
Old culverts are periodically removed and replaced to ensure good on-mountain drainage.
MRG Hiking Trail Gets Long Trail Distinction

The  "road" up Gen. Stark Mountain  has long been a popular hiking route  Now after years of planning the trail has been recognized as an official side trail  to Vermont's legendary Long Trail. The 2.3 mile Stark Mountain Trail begins at  the base of the Mad River Glen Ski Area and meanders up the ski trails to a junction with the Long Trail just south of the summit of  General Stark Mountain and the top of the historic Single Chair.  The moderately difficult trail follows a well-established "work road" offering stunning views as it climbs 2,000 vertical feet to the Long Trail junction. The trail provides another way for hikers to access the scenic Monroe Skyline, a massif that encompasses the rugged spine of the Green Mountains from Lincoln Gap to the Winooski River Valley. Check out the trail map and Hiking Guide to Gen. Stark Mountain.

The Mad River Glen Cooperative and it's allied organization, The Stark Mountain Foundation, have had a long standing working relationship with the Green Mountain Club and have collaborated in many ways over the years. In 2008, Mad River Glen and the Stark Mountain Foundation partnered with the Green Mountain Club to preserve the section of the Long Trail located on Stark Mountain by granting an easement  and endowing future maintenance of the Long Trail Section on General Stark Mountain.  These three organizations also work closely to steward the trail and maintain the Stark's Nest summit hut, Glen Ellen Lodge, and the Theron Dean Shelter.

Built by the Green Mountain Club between 1910 and 1930, the Long Trail is the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the United States. The Long Trail follows the main ridge of the Green Mountains from the Massachusetts-Vermont line to the Canadian border as it crosses Vermont's highest peaks. It was the inspiration for the Appalachian Trail, which coincides with it for one hundred miles in the southern third of the state.
