Illness on the uptick in Vermont

Stowe Reporter - 1:52 pm Fri Jun 28th, 2013

Lyme disease relatively rare in Lamoille County
Lyme disease has risen drastically in Vermont for the past 15 years, but there are fewer cases of the tick-driven infection in Lamoille County than elsewhere, according to state experts.

Spread by the bites of ticks infected with the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, Lyme disease was reported only 26 times in Vermont in 1999. Just 12 years later, in 2011, the total was 476 cases - that's 76 of every 100,000 people in the state.
