Secretary of State Jim Condos' comments on the Supreme Court's Voting Rights Act ruling

Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos released the following statement after the Supreme Court's 5-4 ruling against section 4 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act:

"I am deeply saddened by the Supreme Court's decision to overturn one of the central legislative achievements of the civil rights movement, today. While great progress has been made since the 1965 Voting Rights Act, the fight for voter equality is far from won.

"To see just how crucial the Voting Rights Act is even today, all one has to do is look at the restrictions on early voting and the photo ID laws that were proposed across the country in the 2012 elections cycle; the Voting Rights Act is one of our greatest protections against voter discrimination.
