Woodbury Strings is now offering private music lessons in Burlington on fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, and ukulele. Woodbury Strings is made up of the husband and wife team, Sarah Hotchkiss and John Mowad who have had a significant impact on the lives of countless children and families in central Vermont since 1990.
The couple recently retired as director and as assistant director of the Vermont Fiddle Orchestra after ten years of service, and are now refocusing their energies exclusively to their private teaching studio and various bands that they both play in. For Sarah and John, coming to Burlington is a return home, as Sarah grew up in the area, and John lived there off and on in the late 80's and 90's after coming from New Jersey. Together they create an old time family feel when they teach with a specialty in teaching beginners of all ages. Woodbury Strings offers a complete program with recitals, public performances, and more. Their new home will be at 12 North Street, just one block from Battery Park, and Sarah will also be teaching at the Burlington Violin Shop on Mondays throughout the summer months.
To reintroduce themselves to the community, they are offering a free instrument demo and trial on Monday, July 1st at the Burlington Violin Shop at 23 Church Street. Participants, ages four and up, may try out a fiddle, banjo, guitar, and ukulele. Sarah and John will play some tunes on each instrument and then give participants an opportunity to try them out. Child sized banjos and fiddles will also be available. The demos are forty five minutes long at either 12:00; 2:00; or 4:00. No preregistration required! FREE. Children must be attended by adults.
On Monday, July 8th the couple will offer low cost fiddle intro classes for all ages throughout the day, also at the Burlington Violin Shop. Appropriate size fiddles will be available to loan for the class. Pre-registration is required as spots are limited. Classes will be held at these times: 10 - 10:45 for 5- 7 year olds; 12:00 - 1:00 for adults; 2 - 3 pm for 12 - 17 year olds; 4 - 5 pm for 8-11 year olds. $8 per participant. Participants should call 223-8945 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to register or for more information.
For those who would like to sign up for lessons, summer registration is recommended to ensure spots for fall. Fiddles are available for rental from the Burlington Violin Shop. Sarah and John can also help families obtain other fretted instruments through the local music stores. Please visit our website at www.woodburystrings.com or call 223-8945 for more information!
