Jessica Machia, Brigitte Sturgis, Kimerbly Ferrer - Motor Vehicle Accident

Preliminary Investigation into this crash reveals that vehicle #1 was traveling in the passing lane when it lost control (likely hydroplaned) and side swiped the passing lane guard rail.

Vehicle #1 then crossed into the center lane and was rear ended by vehicle #2 which was traveling in that lane. Vehicle # 1 then came to rest in the break down lane and vehicle #2 came to rest in the center lane. Moments later, vehicle #4. which was also traveling in the center lane, was rear ended by vehicle #3. After striking the vehicle #4, vehicle #3 crashed through the passing lane bridge guard rails, damaging approximately 100 feet of guardrail, before dropping 50-60 feet to the terrain below, breaking apart upon impact.
Officers from Burlington, Colchester and Winooski Police assisted with closing the interstate at Exits 15 and 16. It opened to one lane of traffic at approximately 01:35.
Charlebois Trucking currently has a full crew of workers at the scene and is in the process of lifting the truck and its contents back onto the roadway and onto large flat bed haulers. They will be at the scene throughout the night.
VTrans has also responded to the scene to assist with the lane closure as well as to inspect the bridge which sustained damage to approximately 100 feet of guardrail.
VT HazMat has also responded to the scene in order to assess, control and deal with environmental issues related to spilled diesel fuel and motor oil.
Members of the Vermont State Police Crash Reconstruction Team also responded to assist with the investigation.
The State Police are asking for any witnesses of this crash to please call the State Police in Williston.

SUMMARY OF CRASH: On the above date and time State Police, Winooski Fire, UVM and St. Mikes Rescue responded to the above location for a multi vehicle crash involving a commercial motor vehicle. Injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
Upon arrival the first responders determined that the commercial vehicle, an 18 wheel box style tt unit, belonging to SGT Transport, had gone over the bridge and come to rest about 50 feet below. The truck was hauling some type of non toxic paper product. The truck was totally demolished as a result of falling off the bridge onto the ground below. The truck landed about 20 feet from the Winooski River.
The operator of the Commercial vehicle was pinned in the truck sustained serious injures in the crash. First Responders, with the assistance of Colchester Tech, were able to extricate the driver and get him up the bank to the awaiting EMS personnel. He is currently in critical condition being treated at FAHC. His identity will be disclosed in a later release.
Three other passenger vehicles were involved in this crash, a Jeep Cherokee, a Chevrolet Canyon Pick Up and a Ford Focus hatchback. The operators and passengers of those vehicles sustained non-life threatening injuries. All but one of them were transported to FAHC for treatment.
Preliminary Investigation into this crash reveals that the Jeep Cherokee was traveling in the passing lane when it lost control (likely hydroplaned) and side swiped the passing lane guard rail. The Jeep then crossed into the center lane and was rear ended by the Chevrolet Canyon Pick Up Truck which was traveling in that lane. The Jeep then came to rest in the break down lane and the Canyon came to rest in the center lane. Moments later, the Focus, which was also traveling in the center lane, was rear ended by the commercial vehicle. After striking the Focus, the commercial vehicle crashed through the passing lane bridge guard rails, damaging approximately 100 feet of guardrail, before dropping about 50 feet to the terrain below.
At this time the southbound lane of Interstate 89 remains closed at this location. Southbound traffic is currently being diverted off the Southbound lane at exit 16. No southbound traffic is being allowed on the interstate at exits 15 and 16. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes. One lane should be opened within approximately one hours. The remaining lanes will remain closed while the commercial unit is removed.

DAMAGE TO VEHICLE: Both the truck and trailer were demolished in the wreck, breaking apart into several pieces.
Injuries: Gauthier sustained serious head injures in the crash and is currently in critical condition at FAHC.
Vehicle #3 was hauling paper from Quebec to Massachusetts.
