Climate challenges

Stowe Reporter - 1:05 pm Fri Feb 8th, 2013

As climate changes, resorts focus on snowmaking, summer, fall seasons
Snow is white gold for Stowe's ski resorts, and they're preparing for a time when it may be more likely - certainly more predictable - to fall from a snowmaking tower than the sky.

Climate change could cause as much financial devastation as environmental devastation in Vermont, and ski areas are trying to stay one step ahead. They're taking two approaches to the problem, ramping up snowmaking capabilities while also adding ways to draw and engage visitors as winters grow shorter and more unpredictable and the non-snow season lengthens (see separate story on the predicted changes to the region's climate).
