MRG Weekly Update

January 31, 2013

Greetings MRG Skiers,

We sure have seen our fair share of ups and downs in the weather so far this year.  Last night

Mad River Glen week in review video 01.31.13
Ry's Weekly Video Update
we took another major hit with rain and warm temps, if you live in the valley you may have mulled over building an ark.  Today we'll be suspending operations to allow the mountain to drain off all of the rain and melt water.  We will plan on re-opening this Saturday and Sunday with the Practice Slope chair and Callie's Corner handle tow.  It's yet to be seen what's left up on the hill but surely it was a big blow to our snow pack.  On the bright side the weather is starting to change over and by the end of the day we'll be back below freezing.  There is snow heading our way on the radar screen, and hey sometimes this is where we luck out!  Using what remains of the snow pack as our base this new layer of wet snow should bond nicely to what already exists.  Hopefully we'll come out on top of this one! Also be sure to tune into the RAMP Weather Page for the latest meteorological prognostications.

In the mean time, please stay tuned and keep thinking "deep" snowy thoughts...

Mad River Glen and Sugarbush are once again teaming up to hostNew England's oldest mountaineering race. It's the biggest race in the East and might be the largest in the country this year. Come on out and  and test yourself on the this amazing trek along the Monroe Skyline. This race is a benefit for the Green Mountain Club and the Long Trail.

The "Ski It If You Can" mantra has long defined Mad River Glen as the home of New England's most challenging terrain. But a key question needed to be answered. Who is Mad River Glen's best all-around skier? No single race or competition can truly measure the all-around ability of any skier. The Mad River Glen Triple Crown Competition Series answers the question.

Changes incorporated into the Base Area master Plan

Also be aware that each Saturday afternoon throughout the season the Co-op's Board of Trustees will be on hand to answer questions about the project. They'll be stationed by the video monitor by the cafeteria - be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to give feedback directly to the trustees.

Co-op History

Robert Owen (1771-1858) is considered the father of the cooperative movement? A Welshman who made his fortune in the cotton trade, Owen believed in putting his workers in a good environment with access to education for themselves and their children. These ideas were put into effect successfully in the cotton mills of New Lanark, Scotland. It was here that the first co-operative store was opened. Spurred on by the success of this, he had the idea of forming "villages of co-operation" where workers would drag themselves out of poverty by growing their own food, making their own clothes and ultimately becoming self-governing. He tried to form such communities in Orbiston in Scotland and in New Harmony, Indiana in the United States of America, but both communities failed.
