We will be tasting Red Bordeaux from the 2000 vintage. A Bordeaux wine is any wine produced in the Bordeaux region of France. Average vintages produce over 700 million bottles of Bordeaux wine, ranging from large quantities of everyday table wine, to some of the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world. Red Bordeaux, is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmene. Today Malbec and Carmenere are rarely used, with Chateau Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain the Carmenere vine. Bordeaux wine is made by more than 8,500 producers or Chateau. There are 60 appellations of Bordeaux wine. In Bordeaux the concept of terroir plays a pivotal role in wine production with the top estates aiming to make terroir driven wines that reflect the place they are from, often from grapes collected from a single vineyard. The soil of Bordeaux is composed of gravel, sandy stone, and clay. The region's best vineyards are located on the well drained gravel soils that are frequently found near the Gironde river. An old adage in Bordeaux is the best estates can "see the river" from their vineyard and the majority of land that face the riverside are occupied by classified estates. The format will be casual, walk around with Vermont artisian cheese board with breads, and an assortment of grilled vegetables. And passed to go with the wines will be, Braised Venison with Cranberry, Lamb Lollipop with Rosemary Glaze and Braised Pork Cheek with Crispy Chevre Polenta. The format will be casual, walk around with small bites to complement the wines. The wines featured will be:

Chateau Cos Labory, Grand Cru Classe, Fifth Growth, Saint-Estephe 2000
Chateau Talbot, Grand Cru Classe, Fouth Growth, Saint-Julien 2000
Chateau Lagrange, Grand Cru Classe, Third Growth, Saint-Julien 2000
Chateau Clerc Milon, Grand Cru Classe, Fifth Growth, Pauillac 2000
Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Premiers Cru, First Growth, Pauillac 2000

A sign-up sheet will be available at the front desk (253-5742 or 800-826-7000) and there will be a $100.00 fee per person. There will be a limit of 30 people for the tasting.
