Vt. State Police - 2:10 pm Fri Nov 9th, 2012
On Friday, 11/2/12, the Vermont State Police received a report of vandalism to high voltage power lines that transmit power from HydroQuebec in northern Quebec to the main distribution center for all of New England.
The vandalism occurred in an area known as the "Top of the World" in Concord, Vermont. The vandalism consisted of 167 of 405 insulating discs being shot out from the power lines, which created an extremely dangerous situation for anyone in the area and the system as a whole. The repair damage to the power line insulators was estimated to cost in excess of $250,000. In addition, the power lines had to be shut down over the weekend of November 3rd and 4th, which resulted in an additional expense to VELCO.
Vermont State Police conducted an investigation in conjunction with the Littleton (NH) Police Department and the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office. During the investigation, a search warrant was executed at a residence in Littleton (NH), and evidence related to the crime was seized. The investigation revealed the aggregate vandalism damage occurred on several different dates. As a result of the investigation, two adults and two juveniles have been charged with Felony Unlawful Mischief and Reckless Endangerment. The four will be due in Caledonia Superior Court on 12/13/12, although this is being prosecuted by Essex County State's Attorney Vince Illuzzi.
The juveniles' names are being withheld at this time. The investigation is still active and ongoing. The case will be forwarded to Essex County State's Attorney Vince Illuzzi for review of potential criminal charges for other individuals involvement during the incidents.
With the start of hunting season in Vermont on 11/10/12, the Vermont State Police would like to remind individuals to respect the property of landowners and not damage property that you may be using.
