The Green Mountains' 'Red State' roots

After the founding of the Republican Party in 1854, Vermont went Republican in 33 of the next 34 elections. The exception was Democrat Lyndon Johnson's landslide victory over Barry Goldwater in 1964.

In 1992, Vermont broke this tradition, voting for Bill Clinton over George Bush and has been a 'Blue State' ever since.
