Key Points of McMullen Campaign for AG

posted at 3:31 pm Mon Nov 5th, 2012 by (WherezIt_Staff)

With the election tomorrow, I thought it would be helpful to summarize key points of my campaign for Attorney General in one place on one page -- so here is that summary

  • Convene relevant parties to develop a statewide policy to address drug-driven crime and thereby reduce the crime rate in Vermont

  • The plan will address drug-related crime in three segments: 1) Hardened criminals who will feel the full brunt of the law, 2) First time offenders involved in crimes without violence who will be referred to court diversion to meet their victims provide restitution and have their criminal records expunged if they successfully complete the restitution plan, 3) Youthful offenders caught with small amounts of drugs for personal use who would be sent straight to treatment

  • In connection with 3) above, I would decriminalize use of personal amounts of marijuana for the first three such offences

  • Negotiate a settlement with Entergy to the Vermont Yankee appeal and withdraw the appeal thereby saving $4 million to $8 million that it will cost to appeal this case with a low probability of success. Put the saved monies to fixing damage from Irene or fighting drug-related crime

  • If I am AG, the office will be run in an open-mined, non-partisan manner and will arrive at actions taken in a truly independent fashion. Government misdeeds will have the same priority in my office as corporate wrong-doing

  • I will apply sound management principles to the $8 million annual budget the AG's office receives. The shift will mean getting involved in potential problems early where solutions can be negotiated rather than litigated after the fact. Litigation is expensive, time-consuming, and unpredictable. Litigation may become necessary but it should be a last, not a first resort. It will also mean setting new priorities for the office, by making drug-related crime, now given little attention, a top priority

  • I will audit the current activities of the 77 person staff of the AG and of the numerous Assistant AGs embedded in government agencies and departments to learn what they are doing and to eliminate duplicative and contradictory activities

  • I will work with the legislature to craft a constitutional law that discloses when food contains GMOs
