Sen. Sanders Statement on 9/11 Anniversary

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon:

"Eleven years ago our country was viciously attacked and 3,000 innocent Americans were killed.

"We learned on that day that al-Qaida had declared war on America and that the small group of fanatics led by Osama bin Laden was hell-bent on wreaking havoc on our country. Today, bin Laden has been brought to justice and the terrorist organization he headed is severely weakened.

"In the midst of that horrible crisis eleven years ago, we also learned - re-learned really - that the people of our country can come together. There were the courageous passengers on the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania who confronted the hijackers of a plane headed to the nation's capital. There were firefighters and police officers in New York City and the Pentagon racing into the disaster, not away from it, in order to save lives. There were people who sacrificed their health in order to sift through the rubble for survivors.

"On this solemn anniversary, the memory of those acts of selfless sacrifice and bravery speak to the best of us as a nation - that we are a people who are prepared to come together and work for the good of our fellow Americans."
