Sanders Confirms He is Clueless on Entitlements, says MacGovern

US Senate Candidate John MacGovern said today that Senator Sanders' own comments prove he doesn't understand the problems facing our nation.

Over the weekend while incumbent Senator Sanders was preparing for a campaign trip to New Hampshire he was quoted saying that Social Security "will be able to pay 100% of benefits for the next 21 years."

"This shows how incredibly short-sighted Sanders is," said MacGovern. "His logic is so convoluted. He thinks that if Social Security won't break its promise to seniors until after 21 years that we should all be satisfied. How absurd! If you're a farmer or business owner and know that you'll have enough money to pay the bill for the next 21 months, and after that you won't - then all of us know, it's time to get busy making a plan for month 22. What about people on social security today in their 60s, who are going to live to be 90 - what happens to them, under Sanders' plan? Sanders won't be up for re-election in 22 years, so he is passing the buck onto someone else. He is pandering, and he is not being honest about the problem our country faces. His course of action may be fine for most of todays seniors, but any voter under 65 needs to challenge Sanders as to what happens to THEIR social security?"

Sanders has often criticized Republicans for trying to start a conversation about meaningful reform, and yet
-Sanders has no plan for the long term sustainability of Social Security;
-Sanders has no plan for Medicare after it's projected insolvency in 2024 (or sooner for some estimates)
-If Sanders could tax ALL income earners over $1Million at 100%, it would not balance THIS year's budget, let alone help save these and other programs for future generations of Vermonters.

"Sanders is the quitessential embodiment of the problem in Washington today," said MacGovern. "He offers the people of Vermont benefits that will last through his next re-election bid. What I hope to give to the people of Vermont is something few have today; hope for the long term future of our country and hope for the next generation by balancing our book and improving our economic outlook."
