"Rally for the Right to Know" on State House Lawn 6/18 Montpelier Vermont

posted at 12:51 pm Tue Jun 14th, 2011 by (WherezIt_Staff)

On Saturday, June 18, from 1pm to 4pm, farmers, organizers, and eaters from around the state will gather on the State House lawn to support H.367, a bill in progress that would make Vermont the first state in the country to require such labeling.

The schedule of speakers has just been finalized, and is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. The speakers confirmed to attend are:

* Brian Tokar, Director of the Institute for Social Ecology, author, and lecturer at UVM;
* State Representative Jim McCullough;
* Dave Rogers of NOFA VT;
* Jared Carter of Rural Vermont;
* Will Allen of Cedar Circle Farm; and
* Khristopher Flack, Labels For Liberty Organizer

In addition, there will be a statement from Bill McKibben and performances by Bread & Puppet theater.

The rally is the latest step in a strengthening movement organized by Labels for Liberty, a citizen-lead group that's also gathered several hundred signatures in support of the bill and held a smaller rally in Montpelier on March 26. Propelled by working people from all over the state, the campaign doesn't endorse or condemn genetically modified foods, but does insist on Vermonters' right to informed choice and the importance of informed choice in a democratic food system. With as much as 2/3 of all non-organic food on the shelves containing genetically modified ingredients, GMO labeling is an issue that affects everyone who eats.
