High Cost Of Using ER For Non-Urgent Services

A Vermont physician testified Wednesday on Capitol Hill about the high cost of using emergency rooms for non-urgent services.

Dr. Dana Kraus, a family practice physician from Northern Counties Health Care, told a Senate subcommittee that a coordinated-care program in the St. Johnsbury area reduced emergency room use and hospital admissions.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who chairs the subcommittee, says community health centers are a a good way to extend primary care to communities throughout the nation in a quality, cost-effective way.
