Solely the Sonnet with Julia Shipley -

The Sonnet derives from the latin word meaning "little song." Inspired by requests from River Arts writing class participants, this class will explore the history and development of the Sonnet, as well as examining classic and modern versions of literature's famous 14 line poem. We'll discern the difference between a Petrarchan Sonnet and a Spencerian Sonnet, we'll practice using the poem's components of iambic meters, rhyme schemes and the volta in class writing exercises, and finally, we'll both follow and break the rules as we write versions of our own "little song. "Do not be intimidated: if you can make brownies from a box mix and/or if you can do the Hokey Pokey, then you can write a Sonnet.
