Hunger Mountain Coop is exploring the possibility of leasing space in downtown Waterbury and opening a second retail store.
The expansion would require approval by 2/3 of Coop Member- Owners voting in a balloted election. The Coop Council will explore the feasibility of this opportunity throughout the summer and will not recommend anything that will jeopardize the success of our current operations.
In a nutshell, The Coop was approached by Pomerleau Realty to see if we would be interested in leasing the space currently occupied by RJ_s Market in downtown Waterbury. Pomerleau recently negotiated a similar arrangement with the Hanover Co- op for a storefront in White River Junction.
The sales floor and major equipment seem to be in good working order and this potential second location could be up and running quickly, without taking on the cost of building and equipping a brand new facility.
The prospect of a low-risk expansion is very appealing. A new store and new market share would allow us to advance our mission: to sell more healthy and local food, serve more Members, increase sales for local vendors, create more cooperative commerce and deliver greater economic, social and environmental returns. But we have to understand the feasibility.
We plan to do this research over the summer and determine if it is in The Coops best interest to pursue this opportunity. Well be talking with small groups of Coop staff, vendors, and Member-Owners later this month to find out what questions there are. In July, well hold community dinners/discussions in Montpelier and Waterbury for questions, comments, or concerns Youd like to share.
By Labor Day, the Council should be able to make a recommendation on whether or not this opportunity is right for Hunger Mountain Coop. If it appears to be, well continue this Member outreach in the fall before any vote takes place.
The Coop encourages questions and comments from everyone on this prospective opportunity and encourages Member-Owners and the general public to participate in an upcoming small group discussion or a community dinner/forum.
