Chapbook Workshops Stowe Vermont

A four-week workshop, The Chapbook: Writing and Publishing the Slender Book, will be offered at the Stowe Free Library on Tuesdays, June 29, July 6, (no class July 13), July 20 and July 27, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The chapbook is a small book, usually fewer than 40 pages, sometimes thematically organized, perfect for showcasing a short story or a small group of poems.

The four-week course will introduce people to chapbooks and their history, examining and handling chapbooks in a variety of shapes and styles. Then the group will discuss the process of assembling a manuscript for a chapbook.

Finally, participants will learn about navigating the publishing process, from small presses and contests to "Do it Yourself" options. Part of the final class will be devoted to supporting writers as they present plans, designs and content for their own chapbooks.

The course is free; refreshments will be served. Registration: Stowe Free Library at 253-6145 or e-mail

Leading the workshop is Julia Shipley, a poet, free-lance writer, and caretaker of the Writer's Retreat in Craftsbury, a studio rental for writers who need space and solitude to accomplish creative work. Last year, she received an Emerging Writers Fellowship to the Center for Book Arts in New York.

With a grant from the Vermont Community Fund, she wrote a series of poems about small-scale agriculture. The manuscript, "Herd," won the Sheltering Pines Press Chapbook Award and was published in March.
