Wine Tasting in the Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar: South African Syrah Stowe Vermont

We will be tasting new releases of South African Syrah, for inclusion on our list. It seems that Syrah was first planted in South Africa around 1650, making it the first country outside France where this variety was grown.
Winemaking in South Africa goes all the way back to the 17th century, when grapes were first planted at the estate now known as Groot Constantia. Wines from South Africa were prized in Europe throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, but fell into disfavor as the evils of apartheid resulted in world-wide boycotts of South African products. Syrah plantings have expanded significantly, from 1% of the vineyard area in 1995 to 9.7% in 2007 making up a total area under cultivation of 9,856 hectares (24,350 acres).
In South Africa, the variety is predominately known as Shiraz, but the designation Syrah is used for "Rhone-style" wines. Some see this variety as the "great hope" for South African wines. Wines made from Syrah are often powerfully flavoured and full-bodied. The variety produces wines with a wide range of flavor notes, depending on the climate and soils where it is grown, as well as other viticultural practices chosen. Aroma characters can range from violets to berries (usually dark as opposed to red), chocolate, espresso and black pepper. No one aroma can be called "typical" though blackberry and pepper are often noticed. With time in the bottle these "primary" notes are moderated and then supplemented with earthy or savory "tertiary" notes such as leather and truffle. "Secondary" flavor and aroma notes are those associated with several things, generally winemakers' practices (such as oak barrel and yeast regimes). The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread.
The wines featured will be:
Two Oceans, Western Cape 2008
Sincerely, Western Cape 2008
Graham Beck, "Railroad Red", Western Cape 2007
Bon Cap, Robertson 2006
Beaumont, Walker Bay 2003
A sign-up sheet will be available at the front desk (253-5742 or 800-826-7000) and there will be a $15.00 fee per person.
