Lawmakers and Gov. James Douglas completed the second year of the legislative biennium just after Wednesday night became Thursday morning.

The midnight adjournment was bittersweet for many in the Statehouse. Several prominent lawmakers will not return in their current roles, either because they are retiring or because they are running for higher office.

The session began with deep, sometimes bitter divisions between Douglas and legislative leaders, who last year overrode his veto of the state budget, veto of a same-sex marriage bill, and faced a more than $150 million gap in the state budget.
