Premier Map Company - Possible scam, Possible Fraud

Vt. State Police - 2:40 pm Wed Apr 21st, 2010

On 4/19/10, a representative from a company calling itself "Premier Map Company" called a local business in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, advising they are working under contract with the Caledonia Courts to produce a brochure.

The representative tried selling advertising space that included a picture on the front of the brochure for $389. They advised they were calling from Lyndonville, Vermont. State Police later spoke with the company, and they advised they were out of Davenport, Iowa. An Internet search revealed this company has been accused of being a scam several times before. The Caledonia Courts advised they have no contract with this company and neither does the NEK Chamber of Commerce. According to the search, they have used different Chamber of Commerce names in the past rather than the courts. Businesses and people are encouraged to use common sense and verify sources before giving money to anyone calling, e-mailing or mailing them with anything of this nature.

  • Suspicious Advertising

We too were contacted by Premier Map Co. saying they represented our local Chamber of Commerce, and were taking orders for another map advertising campaign. What made me suspicious was the fact that the Chamber only did the maps every four years, but they tried to tell me they had changed to a quarterly program. They offered a 10% discount if I gave them credit card information right then, which was a red flag to a possible fraud.
After telling them I was not interested, a couple of weeks later we received an invoice in the mail for $449.50 that indicated I had placed an order for our ad to be on the maps.
If they had received the credit card information, they could have started charging against our company credit card, and could have received a lot of money. Good thing we did not feel right about the transaction, as the initial sales call was very professional, and they even referred to our current ad on the map. Please do not get taken by this company!

I worked for the company. They were very unprofessional and the work ethic was terrible. I was handed projects that had bogus distributors, or the distributors had been out of business for many years. I had called many people on my "list" that had already placed an ad many months ago and they never saw their complimentaries. We were told to tell them that that was a corporate problem. I don't even think they have a corporate office. The only location is in davenport iowa. There are no others. They are an elaborate scam that has played with the law for many years. I now have a real job in customer service with a business backed by the BBB.
