Ethel Elizabeth (Holden) Vasseur, of Barre passed away on Monday, April 5, 2010 at the home of her daughter, Diana Thurston of Orange after several years of declining health.
Ethel was born on November 11, 1924 in Worcester, Vermont. She was the eldest daughter of Ezra and Eva (Bolio) Demers. She attended schools in the Montpelier area until High School when it became necessary for her to remain at home and help care for five siblings.
In 1945 she was married to John Raymond Holden. He died on September 9, 1949. She then married Adrien R. Vasseur in 1975. He died on March 21, 2000.
She worked at many Central Vermont companies including The Reddy Company, MH Fishman Five & Dime, Montpelier Steam Laundry, and the Montpelier Lodge of Elks #924. She retired from East Montpelier Elementary School where she was the 'chef' for more than 25 years.
She loved to crochet, knit and do plastic canvas. In later years she enjoyed camping with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include her daughter, Diana M. Thurston of Orange and her son, Robert J. Holden (Mary) of Moretown, five grandchildren, Nancy D. Benoit (Edward) of Barre, H. James Clark (Kelly) of Barre, Deborah E. Posey (Sam) of Meridianville, Alabama, John R. Holden of Cambridge, MA, and Eli R. Holden of Moretown; seven great-grandchildren, Justin D. and Ryan E. Williams of Meridianville, AL, Joshua J. and Elizabeth A. Clark of Barre, and Aliza M., Nicholas E. and Owen R. Benoit of Barre and Adrien's four children, Carol Blakely, Dennis Vasseur, Richard Vasseur and Donald Vasseur.
She was predeceased by three siblings Margaret Chapin, Arlean Coppins and Robert Demers and Adrien's son, Douglas Vasseur.
Calling hours will be held at Barber & Lanier Funeral Home from 7 to 9 on Friday, April 9, 2010. A graveside memorial service will be scheduled at the convenience of the family on a date yet to be determined.
