A prominent Senate lawmaker is looking to save money by reducing the number of fulltime lawyers working for the Legislature.
Though his proposal was shot down unanimously by a committee that oversees the Vermont Legislative Council, Sen. Vince Illuzzi is moving forward with a plan to reduce by nearly half the number of fulltime staff attorneys helping elected officials draft laws.
Under Illuzzi's plan, five of the 13 fulltime lawyers on the Legislative Council would be reduced to half-time, or "session-only," positions. Illuzzi says he thinks the move could save $200,000 to $300,000 annually.
