Unions Say State is Wrong on Criticizing Bridge Contract

As a spring groundbreaking on the Lake Champlain bridge project nears, union officials are urging lawmakers to endorse a controversial labor agreement.

They say the agreement will save taxpayer money and ensure good working conditions for Vermont workers.

Vermont transportation officials last week rejected the "Project Labor Agreement" proposed by the New York Department of Transportation, which is overseeing the $110 million project. Pro-union provisions in the contract, according to Secretary of Transportation David Dill, would effectively keep Vermont contractors - the majority of which run "open shops" - from participating in the two-state bridge replacement project.
