Vt. Education Chief Wants Control to Cut Staff, Districts, Close Schools

Cutting staff, reducing the number of school districts and closing small schools is being proposed to slash spending in the state's $1.

5 billion-a-year public education system, according to the long-awaited "Challenges for Change" report from Armando Vilaseca, the commissioner of education.

If approved by lawmakers - and that seemed unlikely Tuesday based on the reaction in the Statehouse - the changes would bring the largest overhaul in Vermont's education landscape since the passage of Act 60, the state's landmark school funding proposal.
