Vt. House Passes $1 Billion Budget, Bogs Down Over $38 Million Savings Plan

The state House of Representatives gave preliminary approval to its version of the state budget by an overwhelming margin Thursday.

But virtually none of the debate on the floor was about what is in the "big bill," which spends more than $1 billion in state General Funds and more than $2 billion more in federal funds.

Instead, the conversation was about what was not before lawmakers: the details of how a proposal to save $38 million through government efficiency and restructuring would work.
