Mael Le Scouezac bested 45 other students from across Vermont to win the Vermont State Individual Spelling Bee on Wednesday.

Mael, a seventh grader at Craftsbury Academy, will now compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington. D.C. in June.
The winning word was "ornithoscopy," which means bird watching.
Taylor Marquis of Missisquoi Valley Junior High School came in second, and Abigail Postlewaite of Charlotte Central School came in third.
The bee was sponsored by the Vermont Principals Association, the Vermont Department of Education, the Vermont Humanities Council and the Burlington Free Press. Mael received a trophy, a Net Book donated by Hannaford Supermarkets and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. donated by JetBlue Airways, FairPoint Communications, Saint Michael's College and Hannaford Supermarkets. In addition, the top three spellers received reference books and gift certificates. The second place winner received a plaque and all students received a medallion for advancing to the state level. All of the students who compete in the national spelling bee will receive cash prizes ranging from $50 to the $12,000 championship prize.
UVM Professor Phillip Baruth served as pronouncer for the event. Commissioner Armando Vilaseca was on hand to present the awards.
