Lawmakers show support for reopening State Hospital canteen

MONTPELIER – The popular canteen at the Vermont State Hospital, closed two months ago as part of the state's budget cuts, may reopen this summer thanks to a strong appeal by advocates to supportive lawmakers.

Vermont House lawmakers easily approved a budget adjustment bill Tuesday morning that included language from the Senate directing the state government to study if the canteen can be run as a deficit-neutral operation.

Gov. James Douglas' administration shut down the canteen, a cafeteria-style gathering place for patients and staff at the Waterbury mental health facility, in December as the state struggled with its latest financial problems.
