1071 Frank-fm and Freezing Fun for Families announce that the 12th Annual Co-Ed Winter Softball Tournament returns to the Barre March 5th, 6th & 7th. |
The Co-ed Winter Softball Tournament was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2009 as the largest Snow Softball Tournament on the planet.
The Tournament, Founded in 1999 by Barre native, Cass Bresette raises money for Vermont families who have a child battling a life threatening illness. In 1999 Freezing Fun For Families held it's first snow softball tournament. Eight teams got together for the one day event and raised $800.00. Over the next eleven years Freezing Fun For Families with the help of Frank-Fm and many other Central Vermont Business's have raised over $160,000.00, with 100% of all the proceeds going to these families. In 2008 Freezing Fun For Families had 57 teams participate and raised $50,000.00 for a comfort room at Central Vermont Hospital. Only to be topped in 2009 when the tournament brought 61 teams, 795 players and set a Guinness World Record for "The World's Largest Snow Softball Tournament".
This years beneficiary is 8 year old Katie Grant of Williamstown, VT. She was diagnosed in July of 2008 with CML Leukemia. In 11 years Freezing Fun for Families has never come across a situation as unique as Katie's. Katie's mother is a match for a bone marrow transplant but, Katie has 2 sisters, 2 brothers and a sister due any day. They currently live in a 1973, 2 bedroom mobile home.
Due to Katie's current living arrangements the hospital is unable to perform the much needed transplant until Katie can have a room of her own. This is due to her immune system being greatly depleted following the surgery.
Co-organizers Cass and Shelly Bresette and Cory and Heather Touchette both agree that this year's event might be Freezing Fun for Families biggest challenge yet! Last years record breaking tournament raised $25,000 but this year Frank-Fm and Freezing Fun for Families are attempting to raise about $30,000 to provide Katie and her family with a new home following her surgery.
"It's kind of like our own Extreme Home-Makeover here in Central Vermont! We partner with Freezing Fun For Families every year and have been able to use Frank-fm to do some great things in our community with the help of our listeners for some incredible families and kids who are battling cancer, says Frank-fm Program Director and Late Afternoon Show Host, TJ Michaels.
Frank-fm will broadcast live from the tournament on March 5th, 6th & 7th, hosting a radio-thon to raise funds for the Grant family and 8 year old Katie.
This year organizers are hoping to field 70 teams and has teams coming from across the border in Canada.
