Children were tentative at first but quickly warmed up to a sleepy wood turtle who paid a visit to the Richmond Free Library recently.

They learned it was a fresh-water turtle named for its shell that looks like sculptured wood. Environmental Educator Noella Girard of Montpelier presented the Vermont National Institute of Natural Science workshop, Turtle Tales, at the library for preschoolers Jan. 11.

Girard said various workshops like this one are booked throughout the state by schools and libraries all year for different age groups.
