Two students at Smilie Memorial Elementary School counted a big pile of money Friday: $523.78, to be exact.

The tally cheered Alaynna Northrop and Nick Clayton, 10-year-old fourth-grade classmates who share something else in common: Both have immediate family members who are being deployed to Afghanistan with the Vermont Army National Guard in January.

The two children organized Friday's Cents for Soldiers fundraiser to collect money from fellow students, parents and people who work at the school to help bring Vermont Guard soldiers who are training in Louisiana and Indiana home for the holidays before they head to Central Asia early next year.
