Women Start Training for Nordic Season

posted at 3:22 pm Fri Oct 10th, 2008 by (WherezIt_Staff)

Almost 30 women attended the opening session of the Stowe Nordic Outing Club women's training group last Friday.

The group is led by Trina Hosmer, assisted by Carol Van Dyke. The group meets every Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Mt.

Mansfield Touring Center on Mountain Road.

The program's goal is to help each woman improve her cross-country skiing technique so she's in better position to achieve personal goals in the coming season. Interested women can contact Hosmer at 253-0810 or e-mail hosmer@oit.umass.edu for more information.

In the dry-land training sessions of early fall, the group works on drills and activities that promote good classical and skate technique, as well as basic ski-specific conditioning. A representative from a local shop will discuss different kinds of equipment and options for skiers of different abilities.

Also on tap is a waxing clinic by a local representative of the one of the major ski wax companies.

Once snow arrives, each weekly session will focus on a specific aspect of cross-country skiing and apply it to the appropriate terrain, whether uphill, downhill or flats.

For young Nordic skiers, the Bill Koch Ski League will hold registration in the Stowe Elementary School cafeteria after school on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Details about Stowe's Koch League program will be published later. However, one event to mark on the calendar is the Bill Koch League mini-marathon at the Trapp Family Lodge Touring Center on Sunday, Jan. 11. Complete information on Koch League activities throughout New England is available at nensa.net; follow the Kids/BKL link.

The Stowe Nordic Outing Club will hold a preseason meeting at the Golden Eagle Resort on Mountain Road on Friday, Nov, 7, at 5 p.m. Any skiers interested in becoming more involved with local Nordic activities, at all levels, are welcome.
