Mission Statement
The Vermont Symphony Orchestra Association, Inc., a state-supported non-profit institution founded in 1936, exists for the purpose of fostering and encouraging the appreciation of music in all its various forms, with emphasis on orchestral, choral and chamber music. It seeks to raise the common standard of musical education and enjoyment, and to provide, at moderate cost, quality performances for a broad and diverse public throughout the State of Vermont.

Jaime Laredo was named Music Director of the VSO in 1999. He oversees all artistic programming and planning in addition to conducting and performing with the orchestra.

The VSO is a professional orchestra. About half the musicians are from Vermont. The others come from all over northern New England. The VSO is the oldest state-supported orchestra in the United States.

Education and outreach have always been an important part of the VSO's statewide mission. In 2005/2006 SymphonyKids reached nearly 26,000 students at 158 different schools.

The SymphonyKids vision statement:
"To explore the delights of classical music with Vermont school children, and to inspire them with a lifelong enthusiasm for music through a variety of high-quality, educational, and FUN programs."
