~50 Motor Vehicle Accidents on I89

Vt. State Police - 4:25 pm Sun Jan 14th, 2007

Troopers from the Williston State Police Barracks responded to and/or handled approximately 50 motor vehicle incidents on I89 in Chittenden County throughout the morning and early afternoon hours on Sunday.

These incidents included both injury and non-injury collisions, as well as numerous vehicle slide-offs. At least one (1) occupant in one of the collisions required extrication using heavy rescue equipment. These incidents resulted in personal injury and thousands of dollars in damage to vehicles and property.

Operator's driving too fast for conditions continue to place the lives of other motorists and emergency first responders at risk. During this time period a State Agency of Transportation truck was struck by a vehicle that lost control, a flatbed wrecker owned by "Blackfork Towing" was also struck while assisting at the scene of an accident. A Trooper and two state police cruisers were nearly struck, in separate incidents, by operators who failed to slow down while approaching accident scenes.

It was snowing heavily at the time of these accidents and roads were snow covered and icy. Operators driving too fast for road conditions were the primary cause of many of these motor vehicle crashes. Operators are reminded to reduce their speed substantially during inclement weather conditions. Operators should drive defensively and anticipate unexpected hazards by slowing down and maintaining ample following distance.
