Motor Vehicle Accident

Vt. State Police - 2:10 pm Wed Dec 6th, 2006

Operator #1 (O1) was southbound in the left lane travel when
he experienced a sudden loss of control.

O1 advised that initially he thought
he may have blown a tire. O1 reported that he was concerned that his truck
might roll over and attempted to regain control. While encroaching upon the
right lane Operator #1 did not see Vehicle #2 (V2), which was alongside him,
occupying the right lane of travel. Vehicle #1 (V1) struck the left rear
corner of V2. V2 was pushed broadside into the front bumper of V1. O1 was
unaware that V2 was in contact with the front of his truck and pushed V2 for a
distance of approximately .1 mile. V1 & V2 disconnected prior to reaching a
bridge on the interstate. V2 struck a section of guardrail while attempting to
regain control of her vehicle. V2 came to a final position of rest prior to the bridge.
V1 continued southbound across the bridge before stopping in the breakdown lane.
Once stopped O1 observed V2 stopped behind him and realized what had happened.
Following the accident O1 went to V2 to render assistance and check for injuries.
Emergency Services from the Town of Colchester responded to this accident,
along with the Department of Motor Vehicles Enforcement Division & Vermont
State Police. Both operator's were uninjured in this collision. Inspector
Matt Nesto of the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles conducted an inspection
of V1 and did not locate any mechanical or equipment problems. O1 was issued a
traffic citation for an unsafe lane change, accident resulting. High winds at
the time of the collision were the likely cause of the initial loss of control
experienced by O1. This accident remains under investigation.
