The importance of "want" to our children.

The importance of "want" to our children. Waterbury Vermont

As we enter the season of consumerism, parents need to remember the importance of “want” in our children’s lives. Children should not get everything they want on their Christmas wish lists.

In our consumer-based society, it is a source of pride that we can afford to buy everything for our children, if we can’t afford it, then it’s a source of shame. Any parent will tell you that their children are the most important thing in their lives. And we often feel guilty about working late, not having the time to play catch, take them to the park, etc. Not to mention the urge to keep up with the Jones. As a result, we tend to splurge and go overboard around Christmas time, buying lots and lots of presents for those that we love.

It’s time to step back and not let our ego and guilt drive our actions. We need to look at the long view. Our job as parents is to train our children to become responsible adults. We’re supposed to teach them the lessons of working hard, saving money, setting priorities, etc.

Children need to WANT something in order to learn these important lessons. There is no need to learn to save that allowance if they already have everything. There is no motivation to learn to finish those chores if the allowance not needed. If the child doesn’t want/need at least two things, they never have to make the choice of which is more important or learn to set priorities.

So do your children a favor, tone down the gift giving, rein in the grandparents and leave some things on the wish list for the child to buy on their own. Look back in your own memories and remember which things mattered more to you growing up? The ones you unwrapped on Christmas morning or the ones that you worked for, saved for and waited for, checking the mail every day until it came?

Give your children the gift of “want”.
