Should Everybody Vote?

posted at 4:17 pm Tue Oct 24th, 2006 by (WherezIt_Staff)

A great amount of effort is put in to increase the number of people who vote, but is this the right way to go? Should voting be available only to those who are at least willing to make an effort to register? Should voters be able to demonstrate knowledge of the candidates and there positions before they cast their ballots?

Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote.

The problem is not 'good people who do not vote' but idiots who do.

Our government is supposed to be based on the will of the people but since we cannot all vote on every decision to be made, we elect representatives. These people should represent us and vote the way that we would vote. For or against the war in Iraq, insert any other hot issue, etc.

How do you know if candidate X is going to vote the way you want on issue Y? You've got to do some research. The candidates have spent the past 4 months trying to be heard, we have to do our part and listen once in a while.

Agreed- representatives should be better at representing. There are too many changes going on and we are left in the dark. Unfortunately, there is also a mindset and a sense of pride that is missing- thus many people do not take up the interest in research. There is pride in their family but none in the system that is in place for them to speak up. When it comes time to vote, people just make a check mark and then complain later they are unhappy with their decision. Vicious cycle we got going on here.
