DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF WHAT HAPPENED:
On 5/27/06 at approx 06:00 hrs a New York registered tractor and trailer unit,
hauling milk, approx 60,000 lbs, over turned by the Missisqoui Refuge on VT 78
in the town of Swanton, VT.
Investigation at the scene revealed that prior to the accident the operator was
traveling east on VT 78, when his front passengers side tire went off the paved
portion of the highway. (this action caused by inattention) The operator
corrected this, by pulling back onto the paved shoulder of the highway. The
rear trailer tires followed off the road even with this correction and the load
shifted. This in turn caused the trailer to continue off the south side of the
highway and down a slight embankment into a field. The tractor and the trailer
overturned completely once, causing it to come to a point of final rest off the
south side of VT 78, facing north easterly, on its drivers side. The extensive
impact damage to the tractor was caused by the tractor being in contact with
the south side paved shoulder of the highway as the vehicle overturned.
The tractor was totaled and the trailer had damage to the tanker area from the
roll over. Majority of the load was spilled in the field, due to the damage of
the tanker. Swanton Fire was on scene to assist with traffic and Charlebois
Wrecker service out of Cholchester removed the tractor and trailer unit from
the scene and transport it to Canton New York, as per request of the owner.
The operator of said vehicle had no injuries.
