Fall Friends

On Sunday, we went to the Vermont Teddy Bear Company where my 4-year-old built his new best friend, 'Cow Bear,' thanks to The Vermont Cub Project, which invites every 4-year-old Vermonter to build a bear for free. Cow Bear will be dressing up as an astronaut this year for Halloween. There's all sorts of excitement to gear up for this year. Saturday evening in Burlington there's the Halloween Howl Hayrides and in St. Albans there's a Glow Run! Sunday put on your costumes and head to Woodstock for A Family Halloween happening at Billings Farm & Museum. A Last Minute Halloween Costume Swap happens on October 27 in Morrisville. And every Wednesday through November 17 will be a Crafternoonat Fletcher Free Library in Burlington. Keep reading to see some more highlights for this week!

The Seawolves — a football team made up of Burlington, South Burlington and Winooski players — bested the St. Johnsbury Hilltoppers 35-14 in the homecoming game at BHS last Friday. Small Needles, Short Lines and Few Tears: Biden's Plan to Vaccinate Young Children

"White House officials, anticipating the approval of coronavirus shots for 5- to 11-year-olds within weeks, will rely on doctors, clinics and pharmacies instead of mass inoculation sites."

Navigating child care in Vermont

Live call-in discussion: "Child care is unaffordable to many families and open spots in child care centers are hard to come by. The pandemic’s made it all worse, especially on women. 80 percent of people who have left the workforce since the start of the pandemic are women. Meanwhile, child care providers are facing their own set of crises."

Tiny wrists in cuffs: How police use force against children

"Royal Smart remembers every detail: the feeling of the handcuffs on his wrists. The panic as he was led outside into the cold March darkness, arms raised, to face a wall of police officers pointing their guns. He was 8 years old."

Why Kids May Be Melting Down at School

"We can’t put a Band-Aid on a global crisis and all of the stress, anxiety and havoc it has introduced to our lives. It sounds simplistic, but what I heard over and over again is that parents, teachers and students giving each other grace, and not pretending everything is how it used to be, may be the most important thing right now."
