St. Albans, Vt. - During a visit to Northwestern Medical Center (NMC) in St. Albans today, Governor Phil Scott signed a proclamation designating May 6 - 12 as Nurses Week in Vermont to celebrate nurses' care for their patients and contributions to their communities. The Governor was joined by the hospital's Chief Executive Officer Jill Berry Bowen, RN and Chief Nursing Officer Deanna Orfanidis, RN.
"I want to thank Vermont's nurses for their commitment to patients and the health of Vermonters," said Governor Phil Scott. "I appreciate your hard work and dedication. From helping to fight the opioid epidemic to providing healthcare services for our aging population, nurses are on the front line, providing care that makes a difference."
According to the Vermont Board of Nursing, there are currently 14,214 Registered Nurses; 2,135 Licenses Practical Nurses; 4,502 Licensed Nursing Assistants; and over 900 Advanced Practice Registered Nurses practicing throughout Vermont.
"I deeply appreciate the Governor honoring Vermont's nurses and choosing to do so here at Northwestern Medical Center. NMC has a remarkable team of nurses working in all facets of nursing who live our mission of exceptional care every day," said Jill Berry Bowen, RN, chief executive officer of Northwestern Medical Center.
The Governor's visit to Northwestern Medical Center included a tour of the facility and a reception to meet with nurses and hospital employees.
Discussing the hospital's governance and training efforts for its nurses, Bowen added: "Looking to the future, I am excited by NMC's newly announced shared governance model under the leadership of Deanna Orfanidis, chief nursing officer, and also our partnership with Vermont Tech and Community College of Vermont to expand a nursing program into Franklin County, so that the nurses of tomorrow can be trained right here in our own community. This is good for patients, for NMC and others who employ nurses, for local residents who dream of being a nurse, and for the local economy. Through genuine caring, treatment, leadership, and prevention, I am so proud of our nurses at NMC, in our community, and across the state playing an essential role in our journey to a healthier population."
