In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 90th birthday, Depictions of a Dream offers a musical tribute to MLK's life and legacy. Guest artist Counterpoint vocal ensemble presents a suite of songs associated with the Civil Rights movement. "We are so delighted to have the opportunity to sing these gems of the American choral literature and to collaborate with the young musicians of the Vermont Youth Orchestra," says Counterpoint Artistic Director Dr. Nathaniel Lew.

The Vermont Youth Orchestra performs Duke Ellington's Les Trois Rois Noirs (Three Black Kings) alongside the expressive second movement from Antonin Dvo?ak's Ninth Symphony From the New World, the basis for the spiritual "Goin' Home." Rounding out the program is Lou de Lise's Fantasy on "Amazing Grace" for percussion ensemble and VYO senior soloist Sebastiaan West performing the first movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1.

This concert serves as the official launch of the Vermont Humanities Council's 2019 Vermont Reads program. Images and text from this year's book selection March: Book One by John Lewis, with Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell, will be woven throughout the performance. The March trilogy tells the story of Representative John Lewis and the Civil Rights movement in graphic novel form.

VYOA Music Director Dr. Benjamin Klemme explains, "It will be a privilege to join Counterpoint vocal ensemble to present a musical celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life, and to partner with the Vermont Humanities Council to honor his legacy with powerful imagery and text from March: Book One, their inspired choice for Vermont Reads 2019. This integration of music, art, and literature promises to make Depictions of a Dream a unique and memorable commemoration."
