The announcement was made that Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) will receive a $407,064 federal grant from the Department of Transportation for the purchase of electric transit vehicles.

The grant funds will be accepted on behalf of Green Mountain Transit for the purchase of electric vehicles to be used in the Montpelier area. The Low or No Emission Program (Low-No) provides State and local funds to purchase low- emission transit buses and necessary infrastructure updates needed to electrify vehicles.

"GMT is working on a similar pilot project in Chittenden County," said General Manager, Mark A. Sousa. "The opportunity to expand vehicle electrification to Washington County is exciting for us. This is just another positive step toward changing the environmental impact for the state of Vermont."

VTrans is also partnering with Green Mountain Power (GMP) to provide the necessary infrastructure changes to charge the new electric vehicles. In addition to contributing toward the infrastructure upgrades, GMP is able to provide $10,000 incentive per bus of Tier 3 funding.

Project planning will begin in September of 2018.
