Heavy Damages Sustained in Residential Fire in Cavendish Windsor Vermont

On 09-04-18, at approximately 00815 hours, the Proctorsville Fire Department responded to a report of a large structure fire located at 997 Main Street in Cavendish.

The owner, who was home alone, observed smoke coming from a heating duct in his home and went an opened the door leading to his garage and utility area. In opening the door he was immediately overcome by the smoke and fire inside the garage. He then exited the building and went to a neighbors to call 911. The fire department arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the garage and entering the primary living area. The Fire Chief then elevated response to a Fourth Alarm and requested assistance from area departments. Area departments that responded and assisted Proctorsville FD were Cavendish FD, Ludlow FD, Chester FD, Weston FD, Mount Holly FD, Ascutney FD, Weathersfield FD, Springfield FD, Reading FD, Windsor FD, West Windsor FD, Walpole FD, Westminster FD and the Claremont FD.

Vermont Route 131 was shut down for most of the day due to this fire. The Fire Chief Requested assistance in determining the Origin and Cause of the fire. Members from the Fire Investigative Unit immediately responded.

As a result of the investigation it is felt that the fire was likely the cause of an electrical issue involving a car and charging system that had recently been utilized in the garage for a vehicle. Unfortunately due to the scene being hazardous, solar power in place as well as the main carrying beam of the building to be heavily bowed due to the additional water weight, to enter the fire investigative unit was unable to adequately investigate this could not be verified and this the fire is considered to be UNDETERMINED.

No injuries were sustained and the estimated damage was approximately $200,000.00
