Montpelier ArtSynergy Project Public Meeting Montpelier Vermont

Many communities across the country have used public art as a powerful tool to strengthen their identity and build a more vibrant and connected community. Some city officials and residents are asking: Why not Montpelier?

Join the Montpelier ArtSynergy Project to explore how public art can shape the future of the city. The discussion will take place February 22, at 6:30-8:00 at the T.W. Wood Gallery in the Center for Arts and Learning, 46 Barre St., Montpelier.

Described by organizers as an "info-sharing-brainstorming-idea-mashing-Q&A session," this workshop will help shape the master plan for public art that is being developed by the ArtSynergy Project.

Three perspectives on the how public art can help strengthen community identity and vibrancy will be provided by Sara Katz, Assistant Director of Burlington City Arts, Lars Torres, founder of Local 64, and Gowri Savoor, founder of the River of Lights lantern parades.

The discussion will also explore different ways communities have tackled the challenge of building a public art program, and how Montpelier's master plan for public art is coming together to articulate a structure for managing and funding public art.

The meeting follows last week's vote by the City Council to award $50,000 to Putney-based artists Rodrigo Nava and Gregory Miguel Gomez for the city's first major piece of public art, to be installed at the One Taylor Street Transportation Center in the spring of 2019.

The Feb. 22 discussion will be moderated by Michele Bailey, director of public art programs for Vermont Arts Council, and Paul Gambill, Chair of the Montpelier ArtSynergy Project.
