The big bird news of the weekend is of course the Great Backyard Bird Count. It's the most accessible, low-key, community science birding of the year. You don't even have to leave your house to participate in the count (but it's more fun if you do). C'mon and count!

In other Audubon news we have updates about the Winter Eagle Survey, Woodpecker adaptations, Solar legislation, and a Walk in the Woods.

I've been pulling together our Spring events this week. Almost everything is online now, but a few more spring events are still in the works. Visit our Events page for the latest updates:

Have fun with your GBBC counting this weekend!
Winter Eagle Results

Volunteers braved challenging weather conditions to count eagles during the 2018 Winter Bald Eagle Survey. The weather during the 2-week period covered the gamut of conditions: extreme cold, extreme warmth, rain, ice, and snow. Amazingly, volunteers counted 27 eagles on the standard survey routes, and citizens reported at least 51 additional eagles throughout the state.  A Golden Eagle was also reported on eBird during the survey period.

Wild World of Woodpeckers

Adaptations abound for nature’s excavators. While you're out counting birds this weekend for the Great Backyard Bird Count you might see some woodpeckers.
Here are some interesting tidbits to consider:

Solar Love
Showing the love, new legislation promotes habitat for the birds and the bees. The shift to clean and renewable energy is critical for addressing the biggest threat to Vermont birds: climate change. If sited properly and landscaped with birds and pollinators in mind, solar facilities can also provide habitat and food for birds. H.726 would establish voluntary pollinator and bird friendly solar recognition program. Walk in the Woods: Wildlife Benefits of a Timber Harvest
Saturday, February 24, 2018
9:00am - 12:00pm

Wallingford, Vermont
See an active timber harvest that will benefit woodland bird and wildlife habitat, and learn about their participation in the Woods, Wildlife and Warblers Program. The Stone’s property has been conserved with the Vermont Land Trust. Some of the trees harvested will be part of the Habitat for Heat Program, and will be sent to the Vermont Wood Pellet Company in nearby Clarendon where the wood will be transformed into pellets that will heat a local assisted-living facility. Learn more and register.
