Appliance Failure To Blame For Home Fire in Searsburg  Rutland Vermont

On August 14, 2017 at approximately 0500 hrs the Wilmington Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 20 Bishop Road in Searsburg, VT.

Upon arrival of the Wilmington Fire Department the rear, and second floor to include the roof were fully involved in fire. They were able to extinguish the fire with assistance from numerous surrounding mutual aid departments. As a result of Wilmington Fire Chief Moore's on scene investigation he contacted the Vermont State Police Fire Investigation Unit to request an origin and cause investigation for this fire.

On the morning of August 14, 2017 at 0900 hrs Det. Sr./Sgt. Thomas Williams, Detective Sergeant Steven Otis and DFS Investigator/State Fire Marshall Joshua Maxham began an examination of the scene. The Vermont State Police Arson K9 Accelerant Detection Team was also brought and utilized at the scene.

The cause of this fire is due to a potential failure of a large appliance. The classification of this fire is undetermined pending further testing by an electrical engineer. This case remains under investigation and is not considered suspicious at this time.

Nobody was injured in the fire, but the residence is considered to be a total loss. Damage to the residence and contents was estimated to be approximately $350,000.00.

Thomas Williams, or by calling 1-800-322-7766 - The Vermont Arson Tip Award Program (VATAP). Up to a $5000 reward will be paid for information which helps detect or prevent an arson fire.
